Zune Games-First glimpse

Sunday, February 24th, 2008 | Mp3player with No Comments »

Microsoft had finally confirmed that games are making their way to the Zune at CES last year. Well there finally here, but by the looks of it its not a PS2 rocker even. For starters, first-gen Zunes don’t appear to be ruled out by any means, but it’s going to be dependent on the game controls.

Zauri, the sample space shooter game demoed today, uses the Zunepad, thus wouldn’t work (as well) on a Zune 30. Nothing has been decided as to whether games will universally require 2nd-gen Zunes, though. Use of the Zunepad in Zauri was as a track pad and omnidirectional — it wasn’t just up / down / left / right, as in the menus. Right now the system partitions a mere 16MB for storing games, although this might change. Right now there isn’t a professional-grade SDK to announce; all titles should initially be done up in XNA Studio. Means of distribution (i.e. games loaded through an installer, through the Zune desktop app, or through Zune Marketplace?) has not yet been decided. The first beta development tools will be out this spring. There are no plans for Zune game sharing (yet), so to play with a friend wirelessly you both must have the game on your Zune.

Nvidia is working on a downloadable PhysX patch for GeForce 8 cards

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Other with No Comments »

We knew that Nvidia had some big plans when they announced the acquisitions of PhysX creator Ageia. I honestly thought that this would be one of those things that moved slowly, with no real news for several months at the earliest. However, Nvidia has hit the ground running with this and is already working on making the technology compatible with current GeForce 8-series cards.

The Dead iPod Song

At least with the Xbox 360 you get the Red Ring of Death to inform you that things have gone south in a major way, with an iPod, you get no indication. Your iPod just won’t turn on, so you try charging it, still won’t work.

Microsoft holding off on HD DVD reaction, thinks “games” sell consoles

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Video-Games with No Comments »

Microsoft hit us up with a statement today regarding its Xbox 360 HD DVD player in light of the format’s current woes. The company seems to think the news won’t have “any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace.”

Microsoft goes on to reiterate its line about the largest next-gen games library and its belief that “it is games that sell consoles.”

For those of you hoping for some sort of Blu-ray attachment for the 360 — or a sense of purpose for that increasingly obsolete HD DVD player currently hooked up to your 360 — Microsoft does say that “we will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player,” which seems to imply there’s something to announce once HD DVD finally kicks the bucket, but at this point the prospect of a Blu-ray add-on still seems rather optimistic.

iPaq 210 finally ships, gets reviewed

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Cell-phones with No Comments »

For an otherwise-generic PDA, the iPaq 210 has already led a controversy-filled life filled with numerous delays, canceled pre-orders, retracted and clarified official statements from HP, and even a website bug that constantly promised shipment in two weeks — but now it’s finally here, and according to the crew at Brighthand, all that bake time seems to have paid off.

The 210’s 4-inch VGA-res screen drew high praise, of course, but what really set the 210 apart was the wealth of connectivity options — with both CF and SDHC slots, the 210 can store up to 64GB of data, and transfer it over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and USB 2.0. The only issues seem to be a touchscreen that requires a firmer touch than usual and that high $450 MSRP — but if you’re among the few still in the market for a standalone PDA, the 210 is probably worth checking out.

Microsoft job posting hints at “totally new Xbox Live experience”

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Video-Games with No Comments »

Make no mistake, we’ve seen curious job postings lead to changes in our favorite gizmos before, and hopefully, a recent ad on Microsoft’s website is no different.

A listing seeking a Program Manager explicitly states that it’s looking for someone to “be involved in the next release of Xbox,” and wants that very individual to be “part of the Xbox Live team that’s responsible for creating a completely new way for mainstream audiences to enjoy the Xbox and Live.”

Better still, the description suggests that the team would be “building the games, the console interface and logic, and the server support for a totally new Live experience.” Granted, there’s nothing more to go on than this at the moment, but we can’t help but be a teensy bit excited about the notion of an overhauled Xbox Live.

Total Wii sales surpass the GameCube in just over a year

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Video-Games with No Comments »

To say that sales of the Wii have been good would be an understatement. It’s been a little over a year since the console was launched, and still it is difficult to even find one on store shelves. Sure, part of that is due to a limited supply, which also makes one wonder what sales would be like if there was no shortage. Knowing this, it’s no surprise that sales have finally passed those of its predecessor, the GameCube.

Rock Band Weekly DLC – STP, Weezer and Garbage

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Other with No Comments »

Last week’s Rock Band DLC pack certainly wasn’t my favorite. I’ve got no hard feelings against Harmonix for their choice in music, as everyone has different tastes. Thankfully this week appears to be more promising for me, as it features 3 tracks straight out of the 90’s which I remember quite well. Hit the jump for the track listing.

Lenovo’s Thinkpad X300 dissected

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Laptops with No Comments »

I’m not a ThinkPad fanboy, but my experience with ThinkPad has been amazing. The X300 excites me and I’m planning to get one for myself. One lucky dude in LA was able to get a unit for himself. Like a true techie, rather than just using the laptop and brag about it, he went ahead and shares to the world on what’s underneath the X300.
