Spring Ace by Samsung reviewed

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Cell-phones with No Comments »

Look at the glory that is the Sprint Ace, really it’s just a BlackJack that looks a little different and uses CDMA and EVDO instead of whatever AT&T uses. Sure, I know, it looks a little different too, and that kind of makes since, they have managed to fit all the same features in a slightly smaller package with a slightly larger screen (2.3 inches compared to the BlackJack’s 2.25).

Activision takes 3-4 weeks to get you a new Guitar Hero III disc for your Wii

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Video-Games with No Comments »

When you’re playing a game like Guitar Hero, one of the most important features is the sound. If the audio sucks coming out, it will interfere with your gameplay, as it is centered solely around making music. Well when Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock came out for the Wii, people noticed that it only played sound in mono, which really sucks. Finally Activision has setup a replacement program so that you can get a new disc that has stereo sound.

Mtron announces a 1.8-inch 128GB SSD

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Storage-Devices with No Comments »

We’ve already seen a couple 2.5-inch SSDs hit 128GB, but Mtron, our new favorite crazy storage vendor, has just announced plans a 1.8-inch 128GB SSD. That’s the same size as the drives in the MacBook Air, Latitude XT, and Lenovo X300 — and since drive height isn’t as closely related to storage capacity for SSDs, look for 1.8-inch SSDs to become the new standard in most new laptops as capacities increase and prices fall.

Of course, “prices fall” is the operative phrase here — Mtron’s 1.8-inch 128GB disk will probably set you back some $1600 when it ships in April. Yeah, we’ll stick with the platters for now.

Samsung expected to focus efforts on Blu-ray

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Other with No Comments »

Not like it’s any surprise or anything, but the company known for its fairly continuous stream of Blu-ray / HD DVD combo players is reportedly expected to hone in on Blu in the very near future. If you’ll recall, we heard Onkyo make a similar statement earlier this month, and according to an unspecified Samsung official, it’s looking to “show more interest in Blu-ray products than rival HD DVD.”

Unfortunately, that’s all the firm would utter on the record, but really, it pretty much says it all. ‘Course, it remains to be seen what will happen to the forthcoming BD-UP5500, but don’t be shocked to hear that Sammy’s next high-definition movie player only understands one of the two formats.

Nikon D3 review round-up: survey says you’ll want one

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 | Cameras with No Comments »

We’ve already seen it previewed and unboxed, but now that Nikon’s super high-end D3 DSLR has been out for a little while, we’re starting to get some full-on reviews of the camera and, as you might have guessed if you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on one, there’s plenty of consensus going on.

Indeed, the praise being heaped on the camera is among the loftiest we’ve seen, with Photography Blog calling it “pretty much peerless,” Think Camera declaring that “the files coming out of the Nikon D3 look better than any camera we’ve seen to date,” and Ken Rockwell flat out calling it “the best camera ever made by Nikon.” Needless to say, the upsides to the camera are a little long to list here, but it particularly fares well when it comes to rapid-fire image capture and low light photography, which makes it especially well-suited to press photographers. The biggest single complaint the reviewers could find was a lack of any built-in sensor cleaning technology, with only a couple of minor design flaws (like a lack of a spring inside the CF card door) attracting their attention otherwise.

There’s also, of course, that nearly $5,000 price tag, but we’re guessing anyone actually in the market for the camera make do with that in turn for the results they’ll get.
