Willcom D4 UMPC import on sale in US

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | Computers with No Comments »

Willcom’s D4 UMPC might be rocking the smartphone look but its guts are pure PC. Running Vista on a 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor with 1GB of RAM, a 40GB hard-drive and 5-inch touchscreen, plenty of people were interested in the QWERTY-blessed device but Willcom are showing little interest in releasing it outside of Japan.

In situations like these, if you’ve the money, imports are your only option, and GeekStuff4U have just thrown up a pre-order page for the D4 which suggests they could be in the US by June 20th.

Microsoft Wearable Mouse Concept

Microsoft’s latest patent involves a Wearable Mouse concept that runs on gyroscopic technology, doing away with the need to move your hand from your keyboard to the mouse constantly.

Coincidentally, this is pretty much the same technology that is found inside the Wiimote, but it remains to be seen how much longer it will take to get this concept up and running. The mouse will activate when you make a fist, while both left and right buttons will be activated by your thumb. I wonder how sensitive this mouse will be should it be realized - will it be good enough for desktop publishing?

Friday, April 18th, 2008 | Computers with No Comments »

Portable hard drives aren’t poor cousins of their computer based brethren anymore, as Mercury has proven with its On-The-Go model which holds up to 500GB worth of data in a pretty interesting design.

It supports USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 connectivity, and is fully Firewire bus-powered which means you don’t have to worry about lugging an additional power adapter each time you bring this out from your home. Unfortunately, those relying on USB connectivity might require the separate power adapter instead. Would you drop 500GB in a transparent case?

Music And Computers

Sunday, March 30th, 2008 | Computers, Laptops with No Comments »

As a musician myself, turning sheet music is the bane of my art. Ok I confess. I haven’t touched a musical instrument since the 11th grade but I did play for almost 8 years so there! Back to the subject at hand, the CLEF system consists of a flexible LCD touch screen with a built-in stand and a wireless foot pedal.

Use the pedal to turn digital sheet music or just touch the screen. It also throws in some computer functions by allowing on the fly scoring, note taking, and collaborative writing. When you need a real computer, a keyboard slides out from underneath the screen and use the foot pedal as a stereo to enjoy the music you just played.
