It’s hard to imagine that there could still be people out there who believe hard-drives will have as much space on them as manufacturers’ spec-sheets boast, but that very issue looks to have turned around and bit Creative on the behind. |
A class-action suit was filed against the company regarding the quoted capacity of their hard-drive based media players, and it could result in a huge settlement for anybody who bought such a device between May 5th 2001 and April 30th 2008. Of course, Creative themselves aren’t admitting culpability, but seem to be making the gesture as more of a goodwill attempt than because they secretly feel guilty and have been unable to sleep at night.

Folks residing in the US will be able to get their hands on the Mickey MP3 player without paying an exorbitant amount to an importer - but it does have one major drawback. |
Apparently, this MP3 player “contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, or birth defects or other reproductive harm.” Are you willing to risk growing a third limb for 1GB of storage by forking out $70? Folks in Japan seem to be doing pretty well…so far.

You know those fancy Mission Impossible mission briefings that self-destruct in the coolest manner possible? Well, the DVD-D disc format isn’t too dramatic, but it will automatically self delete after 48 hours of the package it comes in being opened. |
DVD-D supposedly offers the full DVD experience, digital quality video and sound together but has this security protection added which makes it a boon to movie rental companies. It is compatible with all DVD drives, so you can watch it on your computer, in the car or even on a game console. Currently, France, Italy and Scandinavian countries have adopted the DVD-D format.

Sega Toys have lifted the veil on its Music Robot ODO that bears a resemblance to the Sony Miuro, making this a more affordable alternative for folks who think that the Miuro is extravagantly priced. |
The Music Robot ODO does fall short in comparison to the Miuro, where the missing WiFi connectivity and digital camera functions are the most notable ones. Still, it retails for slightly a tenth of the $1,000 plus price point which the Miuro demands, making the lack of features much more palatable. The LCD display shows off the current “mood” of the Music Robot ODO, dancing along to the tempo of the current tune playing. With the included remote control, you will be able to “drive” your tunes pretty much everywhere you go in your home.

Now the Philips DCP951 is truly a wonder - it not only plays DVDs, but also does DVD +/-R and DVD +/-RW, VCD, DivX, and MPEG4 movies as well. Heck, it even doubles up as an iPod touch dock, enabling you to view videos on it without resorting to the touch’s relatively tiny display, while charging up the iPod simultaneously. |
In addition, an SD/MMC memory card slot makes it a snap to view short movies and digital photos stored on that media as well. The 9″ LCD display surely makes this a pretty decent companion to have if you’re on a long haul flight. The Philips DCP951 retails for $199 each - just don’t go purchase bootleg copies of movies whenever you’re traveling lest you get caught!
